Raising awareness about sun protection on Skin Cancer Action Week 2019

Raising awareness about sun protection on Skin Cancer Action Week 2019

Skin Cancer Action Week - Sunday 17th to Saturday 23rd November 2019.

Why we are raising awareness:

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the USA but it is also one of the most preventable.

Many don't realize that not all fabrics protect the same from the sun. Did you know that a regular white cotton t-shirt may have the equivalent protection of wearing SPF5 sunscreen? All Solbari products have the highest sun protective rating available in the world for fabrics and are tested in Australia with a UPF50+ certification, which is the equivalent to wearing SPF50+ sunscreen all day long.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, sun protective clothingsun hatsUPF50+ accessoriessunglasses and sunscreen are the best ways to help prevent skin cancer.

  • It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
  • Melanoma rates in the United States doubled from 1982 to 2011 and they continue to rise.
  • More than 1 million Americans are living with melanoma.
  • Melanoma incidence rates are higher in women than in men before the age of 50; however, rates in men are twice as high by age 65 and three times as high by age 80.
  • Sun damage is cumulative and it is never too late to become sun smart.

  • A reminder of the 5 sun-protective measures well known in Australia to keep you safe in the sun:

A combination of these measures along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk.

Solbari is an award-winning purpose-driven social enterprise with the mission to offer the best in UPF50+ sun protection with great style and comfort, so you can enjoy the outdoors safely in the sun.

Most don't seem to understand the UV index, and how quickly you can get burnt in the middle of the day. There's still a long way to go for sun safety education!

As a teenager growing up in England my favourite summer pastime was sunbathing with friends. I have been extremely lucky to have not developed skin cancers (to date) and I am willing to start to take better care.

It's all about awareness really, and people are aware, they just need to take it seriously and notice it more. Knowing the consequences and being mindful of how easy it is to avoid, life in general, being out and about, is much easier, happier and less painful.
